Founder & President
Pakistan Kidney Institute
Pakistan faces a dire healthcare challenge—one that is both deeply human and tragically preventable. Over 60% of our population lives on less than $2 a day, and for many, even basic health services remain out of reach. Our government hospitals are overburdened and under-resourced, and patients often suffer due to delayed or inadequate care.
Located on the global stone belt, Pakistan experiences a high incidence of kidney stones, a condition that, while easily treatable in early stages, still accounts for 8–10% of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) cases in the country. By contrast, this figure is only 2% in developed nations like the United States—highlighting the devastating impact of late diagnosis and limited access to quality care.
The burden doesn't end there. Kidney and bladder cancers are spreading at an alarming rate due to increasing pollution, contaminated food and water, and a lack of public awareness. Sadly, most patients only seek treatment when their disease has reached an incurable stage. Pakistan now ranks eighth globally for the highest rates of kidney disease, with over 17 million people suffering from kidney-related conditions. Alarming research reports show CKD prevalence among Pakistani adults reaching up to 29.9% in some regions.
The crisis is worsened by an acute shortage of medical professionals and infrastructure. According to the World Bank, Pakistan has only 0.8 physicians, 0.6 nurses, and 0.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people—a stark reflection of the challenges we face.
Poverty is a test from Allah (SWT). But when poverty is coupled with illness and a lack of medical resources, the trial becomes even more severe.
At Pakistan Kidney Institute (PKI), we are committed to easing this burden. Since our inception in 2004, we have provided free, state-of-the-art healthcare to more than 190,000 financially underprivileged patients, regardless of race, religion, or background. Our services encompass prevention of kidney diseases, treatment of urological cancers and kidney stones, medical education, and cutting-edge research—all under one roof.
PKI is not just a hospital. It is a movement.
But one PKI is not enough. To truly combat the rising epidemic of kidney diseases in Pakistan, we need 100 PKIs.
Let us unite. Let us fight kidney diseases—together.
Support the mission. Support PKI.
